Hello, my name is Ira, and I’m a mother of Yana 12 years old with Down syndrome. We have started treatment and rehabilitation for Down syndrome at the research institute 3 years ago. There is still no oral speech, but a written skill is beyond all expectations. From today. Background: today at the dacha I hid for at least an hour in the bushes from the child. Her version is presented at home in writing under the title “Walk”: “Today I walked at the dacha myself. It was very fun. I saw a variety of houses and plants. I memorized the way so as not to get lost. When it got scary, I walked back. I want to go to school myself, but I am not crossing the road to school correctly. I want to learn as soon as possible.” Spelling and punctuation – as the child wrote).
Before the treatment, we did not even have a pointing gesture. I sent her to school and was ready for the fact that she would not “pull” the program for educational institutions either. And now the big question is whether there is an EE at all, since not only the gorgeous construction of sentences, arguments in Russian and Ukrainian, without errors, but also excellent mathematics in the general education program (4th-grade inclusion). Now I am racking my head on how to fulfill her desire to go to school on her own because it is not far (7 minutes), but several times to cross the road, including once with a traffic light.
P.S. I would advise parents of non-speaking children to pay more attention to the professor’s words – treat them as if they understand everything because you really do not know what and how much they (do not) understand. Explain everything, even if you think it’s too early for him. You won’t lose anything, even if you say it in vain, but if it is not in vain … then the child will sooner or later surprise you!
Many thanks to the Professor and all the medical staff of the Research Institute!!!
