Global developmental delay GDD treatment (stage 1)
mother Yulia, son Nikita 3.10 y.o Kharkiv, Ukraine

Good day to everyone! I’m Yulia, Nikita’s mother, we are from Kharkiv. Diagnosis: global developmental delay GDD. We completed stage 1 of treatment + returned from support yesterday. This is my first review, so it will probably be long). We arrived for treatment at 3rd 10th. Deterioration in the child’s behavior and development appeared after 3 years and was wavy. Before this, the child developed both physically and mentally well, he began to speak words at the age of 1.5, and at 2 he answered the question “Who are you?” – Nikita, before 2.5 we learned the alphabet (Russian and English), numbers, colors, shapes and figures, the names of fruits and vegetables, flowers, at 2.6-2.7 he began to have high-quality adjectives and verbs in his speech . The child was cheerful, constantly sang and laughed a lot. Both gross motor skills and fine motor skills were fine. When Nikita was 2.8, we returned to Kharkov (before that, because of the war, we left for central Ukraine and changed our place of residence 5 times). And this is where the problems started. They started with us, with our parents (because everyone’s housing was damaged – with us, my parents, my mother-in-law, everything had to be restored in order to live somewhere). My husband had a serious operation during the war, 2 months. he was simply on the verge of life and death; he lost his job, like many others. As a result, all the repair work fell on my shoulders, while my husband was recovering and looking for work. The child was always with me, but I had to leave him to play alone in a closed room so that he would not get into the mud of the renovation. Plus, during the same period, he began to refuse to sleep during the day; it was generally impossible to get him to sleep. And after some time, I began to notice that the child was singing less, not laughing as much, and began to answer questions every other time. I can’t say that he stopped developing, but his development definitely slowed down and the child became more closed. During this same period, I realized that my nerves were losing control. It was physically and mentally difficult for me to carry everything on my own, plus constant savings, we had 5 thousand UAH for everything per month (help from the state, thanks to him for that). I cried very often in front of the child. At first he came up to me and hugged me, feeling sorry for me. Then, apparently, I realized that this was the norm and stopped. I freaked out at my husband, and sometimes I lashed out at my child. In general, the story of our misadventures can be told for a long time, but I want to talk about good things. First, I went with the child to our Kharkov children’s neurological clinic, where we were examined and told that the EEG was normal, but intracranial pressure was slightly increased, that this was age-related and he would outgrow it. A neurologist, psychologist and speech therapist wrote in their conclusion that everything was normal, development according to age. But I saw that not everything was all right. In December 2023, I found the website of the professor’s clinic on the Internet and realized that we both needed to go there. We collected money and in February we arrived at stage 1.

I will describe the main problems we addressed:

– lethargic in the daytime, hyperactive in the evening.
– from the age of 3.4, as a sign of protest, he banged his head (more often against me).
– stopped singing and laughing, he was very serious all the time.
– became inattentive, ungrouped, absent-minded.
– showed very strong protest behavior, and to everything.
– He began to eat worse, ate a couple of spoons of food and said, that’s it, I’m full. That is, there was no appetite at all. Exactly like mine.
– gross motor skills deteriorated, he often stumbled, his balance suffered (at just over 2 years old he could climb all the slides and stairs on the playground, he even loved to swing on a swing without a back and on chains), at 3.4 I couldn’t force him to walk on hanging steps).
– “I, me, mine” disappeared somewhere (as if he stopped feeling like a person).
– after suffering 5 viral infections in a row (from September to December 2023), one of which was coronavirus, his salivation increased (at first it seemed that this was because his nose was often stuffy, but this continued after recovery) his immunity dropped greatly .
– often there was something like an allergy (the skin on his legs was periodically very dry and he often scratched it).
– The child’s speech became nervous and sluggish.
– he became fixated on figures, numbers, letters (everything that he and I had previously taught). Previously, when he fell asleep, he said “mom, hug me” or “I want to sleep with mommy.” Lately he has been telling me to leave and that he wants to sleep with a star/heart, etc.

What changes after stage 1:

– began to fall asleep in the evening at 21:30, as if on cue, sometimes he falls asleep at 20:30 (previously he fell asleep at 22:30-23:30)
– the lethargy replaced by hyperactivity went away, behavior leveled out.
– again asks me to read fairy tales to him, listens carefully and does not interrupt.
– became more energetic, gained confidence in movements, became more flexible and free in movements. Again he climbs on everything that is on the child. platforms, confidently and deftly. Sometimes he gets into a rage and climbs some kind of high ladder (like a wall bars with a horizontal bar at the top), then he is overcome by fear, hehe goes down and doesn’t agree to climb back up. But 2-3 days pass and he consciously slowly climbs back there himself.
– I began to speak more, many more verbs appeared in everyday life, I began to compose more long sentences.
– began to look around more and be more interested in everything.
– began to answer the question “why?” The first time he answered was when we went for a walk outside and went down the stairs (our lights are turned off and the elevators don’t work). I asked: do you know why we take the stairs and not the elevator? Answered: because the elevator is not working. I ask: why doesn’t it work, he: because there is no light. Previously, he simply froze in response to such questions, pretended that I had not asked anything, and said something of his own. And a week before the support he asked me: why do dandelions turn from yellow to white? This is actually the first difficult question from him.
– “I, me, mine” appeared again. When I say “let’s run, whoever gets to the gate first”, he just shouts “ME!!!”
– his appetite has improved, he eats 2/3 of the portion himself, he especially likes to eat at someone’s house or in public places – in a park, a cafe.
– dryness on legs has gone away. During treatment, around day 9-10, he began to itch all over, scratching not only his legs, but also his arms, head, and neck. It was obvious that it was nervous. Then it gradually began to pass.
– increased salivation has passed.
– the child again began to sing songs, smile and laugh with a sincere, catchy children’s laugh. He has become more gentle, he often hugs me and gently says “maaaamochka”)))
– in kindergarten she loves to do exercises, at home she makes me and my husband do the same, shows how to do the movements correctly.
– eye contact has improved a lot. Previously, he could look into my eyes for a long time only in the morning while sitting on the potty (I don’t even know why this was so), during the day the gaze was often scattered, fleeting, and in the evening it was a little better. Now he looks all day long, sometimes for a very long time and often, especially when he asks something (waiting for an answer while looking into his eyes), sometimes less when he is passionate about something – drawing or doing something.
– the obsessions have almost completely disappeared, now he likes animals and fairy-tale characters more and more. Previously, he compared everything with numbers, letters, shapes. Now something looks like the face of a fox, something like a troll, something like a salmon))

More achievements over the past month:

I learned to rinse my teeth after brushing (he takes water into his mouth, pushes it around his mouth like an adult and spits it out. Previously, he just took water into his mouth and immediately spat it out). He’s no longer afraid of toothpaste with mint (previously he was hysterically afraid), now he even asks me to buy him Tic-Tac with mint flavor. In the store he carries a shopping basket (and I don’t ask him to do this, he takes it and carries it himself). She holds doors for me everywhere – in the store, on the subway. I learned how to inflate balloons correctly – inhale through the nose, blow out through the mouth. (I used to hold it with my fingers and inhale and blow out air through my mouth). Easily fastens zippers and buttons on clothes. I began to dress and put on shoes faster.

I would also like to say something about aggravation. I personally was very helped by the reviews of other mothers who described this period and how it goes. Upon arrival home, a couple of days later the child began to wake up at night and shout “no, I don’t, I don’t want,” with tears and hysterics. This happened for about 4 days, then at night at the same time he simply spun, tossed and turned, muttered something under his breath a little, but fell asleep when I laid my hand on him. Now he sleeps peacefully all night. Protest behavior also worsened, but by the way, I never hit my head after starting treatment, I just shouted loudly “Nooo!!!” He was very upset and cried (almost hysterical with panic) when he hit himself, when he soiled his clothes, when his balloon burst, etc. All this lasted about a month, then slowly began to pass.

A little about my improvements. When we arrived for treatment, I was completely on edge. I couldn’t eat, I slept little, I was constantly on edge, inside there was a constant feeling of growing irritation, guilt, tears flowed from me like a princess without laughing, just like fountains. I weighed 48 kg with a height of 170 cm, and looked like an old lady (to put it mildly). I constantly had a headache, either from low blood pressure or from neck pain – I took Ibuprofen and Citramon every other day. The very first thing that went away for me after starting treatment was pain in my neck and back, and after that the pain in my bowler stopped hurting. In 20 days I gained 4 kg and color appeared on my face)) In a month at home I gained another 1 kg. I sleep well, the feeling of anxiety and tension has disappeared. Being at home, I realized that many of the situations that drove me crazy, literally half a turn, why I was boiling all inside, now don’t bother me at all. Objectively, I have become much calmer, more confident, my mood is better, I have more strength, and I have time to do more.

I am immensely grateful to Professor Vagif Mamedovich Rakhmanov and all the medical stuff of the institute.
Personally, they literally took me from the other world and gave me my child back!
